We are an English-speaking international nursery school following the English National Curriculum Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). This is enhanced by the inclusion of good practice from around the world, including the local Arabic language and culture.

Each child is special and treated as an individual. Our staff provide a learning programme tailored to the individual learning and developmental needs of each child.

EYFS Curriculum

The EYFS is the statutory framework for early years education in England, but is uniquely suited to an international environment such as Abu Dhabi. It provides a set of common principles and commitments for the delivery of quality early education and childcare experiences to all children.

We seek to provide quality and consistency of provision, a secure foundation to each child's development, a working partnership between home and the nursery, and equal opportunity for all.

There are four over-arching principles to the EYFS:

  1. every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient,
    capable, confident and self-assured;
  2. children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships;
  3. children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their
    experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership
    between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and
  4. children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The
    framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision,
    including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Reggio Emelia

The curriculum at Caterpillar Nursery includes influences from the Reggio Emelia style of teaching. This area of Italy is famed for its unique approach to child development which has become widely followed in regions as diverse as North America, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

The key differentiators of this approach include:

  • The image of the child as active citizens in their own right, with an inate potential, curiousity and preparedness for learning
  • A belief that education has to focus on each child, not in isolation, but in the context of their place within their family, community and society at large
  • Parents, teachers and children are all essential partners in the process of learning
  • Projects and visual arts provide an essential narrative and structure to the learning experience. Expect a great deal of creative work with media and recycled materials to develop projects driven by the interests and curiosity of the children themselves.
